ACI Abogados: From Bankruptcy to a Second Chance | Among Entrepreneurs
Among Entrepreneurs: The Second Financial Opportunity with ACI Insolvency Lawyers
Interview with Germán Lopera, Founder of ACI Insolvency Consulting Lawyers
1. What is ACI Consulting Insolvency Lawyers?
Germán Lopera defines the firm:
“ACI Abogados Consultores en Insolvency is a law firm created in 2016 that supports all those people who have economic or financial difficulties and need a second chance from a legal point of view.”
Main Focus: Insolvency Proceedings.
Who it helps: People who face foreclosures, reduced wages, property or vehicle retention.
Purpose: To provide a legal possibility to solve financial problems.
2. The Origin of the Idea: From Personal Bankruptcy to Market Opportunity
Aleja: Tell us, Germán, how was this idea of entrepreneurship born in such a specific topic as insolvency?
2.1. Personal Experience as an Engine of Change
Germán Lopera shares his story:
He had previous businesses (clothing) that resulted in a “fairly large” economic difficulty.
“All of us entrepreneurs had at least one bankruptcy.”
This personal experience allowed him to understand people's difficulties “when they start to close doors.”
2.2. The Discovery of Legal Necessity
While practicing as a lawyer and defending creditors, Germán encountered a turning point:
“I began to find that debtors were filing for insolvency and sitting down to negotiate with their creditors.”
He saw a business opportunity and a great need among the population that was not known: a legal and financial solution.
Fun Fact: In college, bankruptcy law (insolvency) was not an undergraduate subject. “We graduated as a lawyer and we don't know anything about this.”
3. Growth and the Decision to Start Solo
3.1. The Beginnings and the First Alliance
Initially, Germán shared his time between his uniform company and the law office with a partner friend.
They started out in a very small office.
Seeing the potential for growth and the possibility of boosting it with social networks, he dedicated himself “purely” to the law firm.
3.2. Separation and the Single Approach
Aleja: Why did you make the decision to continue alone?
German Lopera:
The topic needed a lot of full-time dedication.
There was a vision of growing much more and expanding to other cities (while its partner was “a little more local”).
The topic of insolvency is an area that not all lawyers like, since it involves “working with people who are already having difficulties” and handling accounting issues.
The name “ACI Consulting Insolvency Lawyers” was born to make it clear that the main topic, the specialty, was insolvency, differentiating itself from large firms that had it as just another area.
4. Strategy and Initial Challenges: Free Counseling and Resilience
4.1. The Free Initial Counseling Strategy
German Lopera:
Initially, they went almost 3 years without receiving initial advice.
The goal: That people don't feel like they just wanted to be charged. They wanted to “attract people to look at the possible solution.”
Growth came from “voice to voice” and specialization.
4.2. The Entrepreneur's Keyword: Resilience
Germán Lopera stresses the importance of conviction:
“Every entrepreneur must be convinced of the capacity and potential of his idea.”
The most important word is resilience: “To be consistent, to be able to stay in the business even when the situation doesn't look easy.”
You have to believe in the business and that the product or service will solve a specific problem.
4.3. The Customer and Honesty
Germán addresses the perception of his service:
His father asked him: “How are you going to work with Quebrados? How are you going to charge Quebrados?”
His vision: People are not in misery “because they are broke”. Bankruptcy is a temporary, short-term situation, a “difficulty in cash flow.”
Principle of the Firm: Total honesty. The person is told whether or not to apply for insolvency proceedings to solve their underlying problem.
“I need to know everything here so that I know what is right for you and recommend what is best for you.”
5. Marketing Strategies and Team Building
5.1. The Marketing Journey: From the Wheel to Social Media
Aleja: How did they become known in the early years?
German Lopera:
Strategic Location: In a busy location (Monterrey Shopping Center, close to the subway) in Medellín.
Initial Actions: Handing out flyers with a lot of effort at the busiest doors. (With funny anecdotes about the ineffectiveness of some contractors).
Evolution: Advertising in magazines, creation of blogs and, later, a fundamental focus on social networks.
5.2. Internal Talent Training
The growth of the agenda and the consistency of clients forced the hiring of more lawyers.
Challenge: No contract attorney was aware of the insolvency area.
Solution: Internal academic days were implemented to explain the law and teach how to advise on insolvency issues.
Expansion: The growth led to the move to a larger office (120 m²).
6. Leadership, Business Culture and Geographic Expansion
6.1. The Current Structure of ACI Abogados
Team: Around 18 people (lawyers, accountants and assistants).
Presence: Medellín, Bogotá (where 70% of the country's insolvencies are held), Cali and Cartagena.
6.2. Keys to Leadership and the Employer Brand
Aleja: How do you create that culture and sense of belonging in a team in different cities?
German Lopera:
Leading by Example: Effort and guidance begin with the leader.
Systematization: Processes are managed in a systematic manner to maintain control and efficiency over the distance.
Surround yourself with Good People: “That's the key, the raw material of any business is personnel.”
Stability: Indefinite term contracts. “If I'm looking for stability, I want it, if you're looking for stability, I'm looking for twice as much stability.”
6.3. Cohesion and Purpose
Purpose is the engine of cohesion:
Academic Events: Traveling together (e.g. seminar in Bogotá) so that people know what is happening in the company.
Sharing the Purpose: To make them understand the importance of what they do.
Personal Anecdote: A client told him: “You saved me from suicide.” This highlights the human component and the real impact of the service.
7. Lessons Learned and the Future Vision
7.1. The Common Mistakes of the Entrepreneur
Germán Lopera shares his learnings:
Mistake 1: Making do with what you don't have (you have to go one step further, but with “your feet on the ground”).
Mistake 2: Making hasty or emotional decisions (e.g. hiring a friend or family member just out of affection).
Mistake 3: Trying to think “what would I do in that situation”, forgetting that “not everyone thinks like one”.
7.2. Technology: AI, Google and Presence
Aleja: How do they deal with Artificial Intelligence?
German Lopera:
AI is an ally: “It will help us to have more time for ourselves” and to humanize us more.
Personal Contact is Essential: In sensitive issues such as financial difficulties, face-to-face presence is vital to understand the emotions and humanity behind the data.
7.3. Final Tip: Being a Soldier with Balance
In the beginning, you have to be a “soldier” dedicated to knowing and doing everything.
Vital Tool: Time Management.
“You have to be soldiers, but with balance.” The business has to be so good that, at any given time, it doesn't need you to delegate.
